late last year music for dreams released the digital album -debut- by bongo entp. this passion project from veteran studio session player jacob andersen brought us an unexpectedly fresh take on south american music traditions. on this new vinyl release, the project is both revisited and expanded upon. cherry picking some of the grooviest cuts from the album for this ep, we also get remix treatments from well sourced collaborators selvagem & carrot green. both hailing from brazil, these producers certainly know how to work latin percussion on a dancefloor. taking on the dreamy cover version of henri mancini’s classic -lujón- (original included too), carrot green ups the tempo and wrangles the elements of the original into something completely different. adding a house kick and dark acid undertones, he takes you on a wet trip with lots of twists and turns. the production duo of selvagem manage something similar with one of the looser bongo entp. jams. the original -foto feita do aviaõ is a jazzy scat sinaalong tune. in selvagem’s hands, it turns into an epic cosmic disco groover, locked into place by a muscular baseline. the vocal chants of the original are here, but used in a lower key and more sparingly to punctuate the bounce of the rhythm. the vinyl includes two other album highlights - the cafe del mar classic -el rey de pollo- , a santana-style chill-out affair featuring mikkel nordsø of bombay hotel fame and finally the moody -spanish winter- with its robotic reggae-like groove and syrup-thick synthesizers bubbling in a bittersweet fashion. a superb package.

alex cortex delivering the heat!! mr cortex is kicking hard with a direct and mental techno tracks! oscillon, a1, is a bleepy affair, direct and repetitive, but please, play it loud and watch. rheometric is in the same alley as oscillon but bringing the bleeps and glitches trip even more in your face. combined with the fat but quirky bassline, it does the peak time techno thing extremely well. b1 s title -shear wave- does the track justice. backed by a fat downtempo beat, the distorted 303-reminiscent synth line cuts through the mix in a way that s impossible to ignore. strain rate tensor rounds up the previous three cuts, also in a very dancefloor-friendly manner. bubbly main lead and anxiety-inducing pad sneaking in the background seem to be the main thing, until another synth hits you as a counterpoint and flips everything upside down. proper no-nonsens stuff!!

underground quality boss jus ed is beginning 2017 in fine fettle, with transition his first album since 2014 heading up a spate of vinyl releases. the triple-vinyl set is full of evocative, immaculately produced deep house treats, from the alton miller style intricacy of the loop 222 bodin strasse and shuffling, yearning the day prince died, to the rich bass and dancing drum machine hits of medellin my new grooveland (inspired, apparently, by a recent trip to colombia), and the low-slung, motor city grooves of sci-fi connection. best of all, though, is the rushing positivity of spring is near, where intertwining synth lines bubble away over a fizzing, techno-influenced rhythm track.

globe trotting crate digger daniel t, exploded on to the scene with a string of releases after his amazing debut tetrachromat on young adults a couple of years back. daniel has been growing some serious gems in his laboratory. two gems that have come to maturity and have been plucked for the fahrenheit/celsius ep on cosmic pint glass records. daniel has crafted something special in these two cuts. beautiful, bouncy and positive tracks that work as well on the dance floor as in the soundtrack to a road trip. after hearing them, cpg called in their top men lauer and jack pattern for remix duties.

the record opens up with the poisonous title-track “two scorpios”, where sharp analogue leads lean on a relentless disco-funk groove, thrusting us out straight against the sweaty walls of the chicago’s muzic box. the airy and enchanting spirals of “solenoid” create a detachment for a sonic trip through circling arpeggios and sparkles. on the flip side, we reconnect abyssy to the “young soulomon” of early 90’s by a warm and robotics dusty house. the mood turns definitely more freaky with “slomo kid”: sampling divertissement with a punkish flavour and emphatic rhythmics, it is the perfect tune to shake down the whole ball of wax.

obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

the second release on our recently launched label comes from no other than our unique ricardo villalobos, under his germanized moniker richard wolfsdorf. besides being a world touring dj and headlining the best clubs and festivals around the planet, he has been a reference producer for everyone interested in forward thinking dance music over the last one and a half decades. at mdrnty we all love his music, dj sets and personality and he has been a key player at our events for many years, so it is with great honour that we welcome him on our new label. faithful to his style, he offers us an over 20 minutes length song divided in two sides. featuring canadian singer beaver sheppard, fiva is a mind bending minimalistic trip. beavers mumbling voices add the perfect balance to ricardos abstraction and hypnotism. once more ricardo shows us how much can be said with only a few elements and how deep it is possible to dive and wonder into his sparse music landscape.
